school prints 1940s
The idea behind School Prints was to produce original
artworks for display in schools. The technical progress
in lithographic techniques made it possible for artists
to produce images that could be printed directly and
machine presses made it possible to produce quite
large editions that could be sold cheaply.
The story of these prints is included in Robin Garton's
British Printmaking published by Scolar Press.
A first series of prints was published in 1947.
A second by masters of European art was
published in 1949.
A third series was published on the occasion
of the Festival of Britain in 1951.
