tom purvis rdi 1888 - 1957

He studied at Camberwell School of Art and served with the Artists'

Rifles in France during WWl.

The graphic style of tom purvis relies on dramatic simplification and bold

cut-out blocks of colour. This was a style perfectly suited to the large-scale

advertising images used by railway companies and seaside resorts - being

relatively cheap and eye-catching.

Purvis was contracted to the LNER and produced a series of impressive

designs throughout the 1920's and 1930's.
